The Permeating Machine

The Permeating Machine is a long-form prose piece that I wrote as my part in the performance, The Oratorium. The multi-reader performance was nearly an exercise in futility. 12 artists reading individual writings, simultaneously, into 1 sound-system, in an enclosed space.

My piece was a reaction to that. I decided to use the idea of an 'echo chamber', and map out our own personal 'echo chambers'. So utilizing text, speech, slogans, tweets, and all forms of content/media we ingest daily, I created a large piece that tries to inundate, illuminate and remind. We are all in a constant state where 10's, 100's even 1,000's of messages are bombarding us, and it is OUR personal responsibility to wade through the nonsense, and find the truths, and realities, that relate to us.

34 Billion dollars for the long-term unemployed.

Perhaps as early as today (Tuesday), the Senate will pass legislation extending jobless benefits for 2.5 million Americans. The House already passed the extension, but Senate Republicans have blocked several attempts this year to do the same. To which Alan Grayson of Florida said; “That, my friends, is the America that the Republicans are trying to revive. The America of desperate straits, and for them cheap labor. The America where people have nothing, hope for nothing, and are desperate to live to the next day. And I will say this to the Republicans who have blocked this bill now for months and kept food out of the mouths of children, I will say to them now, may God have mercy on your souls.” But really It was a branding moment. With their lock-step vote against extending unemployment benefits, the Republicans are indelibly marked as not only heartless but also frivolous in their much-professed concern over the soaring national debt.

Inception, dinner, make-out sesh. Greenspan backs end to Bush tax cuts; “They should follow the law and let them lapse,” Mr Greenspan said in an interview, but Top Senate Republican Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) insisted on Sunday that Congress should extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans regardless of their impact on the deficit. “You should never raise taxes in order to cut taxes, Surely Congress has the authority, and it would be right to -- if we decide we want to cut taxes to spur the economy, not to have to raise taxes in order to offset those costs. You DO need to offset the cost of increased spending, and that’s what Republicans object to. But you should never have to offset cost of a deliberate decision to reduce tax rates on Americans.” It’s quite a message to Americans: Republicans believe $30 billion for unemployment benefits don’t even deserve a vote because the money would be added to the deficit, but Republicans also believe that adding the cost of $678 billion in tax cuts for the wealthy to the deficit is just fine.

The bill creates a consumer financial protection entity over the strenuous objections of the GOP and Wall Street, brings serious reform to derivatives trading, gives regulators the authority to break up major banks that are deemed a threat to the system, authorizes a broad audit of the Federal Reserve, largely bars banks from trading taxpayer money for their own profit and bans many of the deceptive mortgage lending practices that fueled the housing bubble. “It is a good step towards fixing some of the worst practices, most notably by creating the consumer protection bureau,” said Dean Baker, an economist with the liberal-leaning Center for Economic Policy and Research. So there is a strong groundswell of opinion on this issue from the left, but the center also feels strongly that, given everything the Treasury has said and done over the past few months, it would be a complete travesty not to put the strongest possible regulator in charge of protecting consumers. Failing to appoint Elizabeth Warren would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

It will go down in the history books as a turning point – downwards – for this administration.

It’s bad enough that Nevada has the highest unemployment in the nation. And Harry Reid claims to be helping the jobs situation? Really Harry? Recent data show Nevada ranks 50th in the money received from Harry’s stimulus bill. That’s right -- Senate leader Harry Reid has gotten his own state less help than every other state but one. And along with bailouts, deficits, and Obamacare, that’s what Harry Reid’s done for Nevada. Really Harry? That’s not the kinda help Nevada needs.

The Republican hopeful’s camp described the Reno, Nev. gathering as a “press conference” held to publicize Angle’s signing of a pledge to repeal the “death tax” if she were to be elected to the Senate. But when local reporters attempted to ask Angle questions, the GOP hopeful all but ignored their presence. At the end of the event she bolted quickly. As she left the press conference a local television reporter called after her: “Sharron, will you answer some questions really quickly.” Angle did not turn around and a member of her staff responded, “We’re running behind, I’m sorry.” “The whole point of an interview is to use it like they say, ‘earned media,’ to earn something with it,” Angle recently told CBN’s David Brody. “And I’m not going to earn anything from people who are there to badger me and use my words to batter me with.”

Indeed, from the perches of Congress and the cable news circuit, Republican lawmakers have howled at the mere suggestion of additional government spending -- reflecting concerns over rising deficits. But when the debate moves back to districts or the states, the tune is decidedly different. GOP lawmakers have attended ribbon-cutting ceremonies for stimulus projects; they have hosted job fairs with companies who have received recovery funds; they’ve complained about the slow pace of stimulus distribution; and they’ve even privately lobbied departments within the administration for stimulus funds.

In the end, the GOP isn’t just trying to have its cake and eat it too. They’re insisting that the cake has no nutritional value, refusing to bake more, and then criticizing Democrats for not feeding it to more people.

She’s also mad at the “hordes of Obama’s opposition researchers-slash ‘reporters’” that came to Alaska (to presumably do the “opposition research” and “reporting” that someone should have told Palin are mainstays in American politics), the McCain campaign (“To not have had the McCain campaign staff defend my record was an insurmountable challenge, because once a bell is rung, it’s impossible to un-ring,” Palin said), and CBS News for broadcasting an interview with Katie Couric that Palin says was “selectively edited.” Palin says that all of these things fed her decision to quit her post as Alaska’s governor.

Today’s creative tip:

Read widely on a variety of different topics (the Huffington Post is a great place to start!). Try to expand your areas of interest. Become an information sponge. The essence of creativity is the ability to combine disparate bits of information in novel and original ways to form new ideas.(3) In order to do this, you want to expand your brain’s repository of “bits of information” by learning about new topics and developing new skills.

Right-Wing Media Critic Offers Cash For Assault On Congressman Alan Grayson

A furor erupted this week over a conservative blogger’s posting of portions of a speech Sherrod gave in which she told of giving short shrift attention 24 years ago to the pleas for financial aid by a poor white farmer. Sherrod is black, and the operator of the website BigGovernment.com posted a portion of her speech. The blogger, Andrew Breitbart, said he did so to illustrate racism within the NAACP, which earlier accused the tea party of having racist elements. It dramatized how the nation’s first black president has occasionally struggled with racial tensions since he took office over a year and a half ago, after saying repeatedly during his campaign that he wanted to bridge America’s racial divide.

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean took direct aim at Fox News for its involvement in the Shirley Sherrod racism flap, calling their coverage “absolutely racist.” Perhaps one of the more eloquent and official retrospectives resulting from the Shirley Sherrod incident was White House Press Secretary Robert Gibb’s reflection: “ ... I think we live in a culture that things whip around, where people want fast responses, we give fast responses. I think everybody has to go back . . . and ask themselves how did we get into this? How did we not ask the right questions? How did you all not ask the right questions?”

For an ideological wing that swings madly on trees and bangs floors with hairy fists every time race is mentioned, they use it rather liberally when the mood suits the campaign or as a last resort nuclear option. Going into this November cycle, we’re actually pressed to find the usual focus on classic social issues such as abortion or gay rights. The new madness is New Black Panther Party takeovers and NASA conspiracies, a twist of Thurgood Marshall’s indelible legal legacy, the sun tan tax and illegal immigration paranoia for good measure.

The apparent death of comprehensive climate change legislation in the Senate is prompting the expected round of finger-pointing. At the heart of the critique is the idea that the Democratic Party was given a rare opportunity (or lifeline) to get legislation through the Senate when the oil spill in the Gulf elevated the political conversation around energy reform. In the end, that opportunity was squandered. “It didn’t ever get the connection in the eyes of the public,” a Maryland Democrat said, during a sit-down with bloggers and reporters during the Netroots Nation conference in Las Vegas. “They saw the oil spill as an individual problem with one company more so than a dependency on oil. And I think that is probably the reason why we never made the connection. So we didn’t get the bump that we needed. We got a little bit of a bump but not the bump we needed. It’s unfortunate.”

He was very supportive and said, ‘I know this was something you didn’t want to hear.’ I said to him, ‘Thank you for your leadership.’ He’s been nothing but supportive of me throughout this whole journey.” Choi says his commander told him it was clear that “change was in the air,” and inquired as to his personal well-being. “He’s always been kind enough to ask me how I was doing, whenever we had calls or legal proceedings to go over.” Choi says he was told he had received an honorable discharge, and was awaiting the arrival of official documents shortly. “This doesn’t change the foundation of what I’m doing. A piece of paper doesn’t define my worth or honor, and we have a lot more work to do.” He spoke to NEWSWEEK by phone from Las Vegas, where he was recently arrested in a DADT protest action.

With Chelsea Clinton’s July 31 wedding to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky fast approaching, the surrounding media frenzy has zeroed in on a particular point of interest: the fact that Mezvinsky is Jewish and Clinton Methodist. Still, the interfaith aspect of such unions presents unique issues that single-faith couples do not encounter, and this complication has armed the media with an additional lens through which to scrutinize the impending Clinton-Mezvinsky union. The wedding is set to take place at Astor Courts, a secluded estate along the Hudson River built as a Beaux Arts style playground for John Jacob Astor IV more than a century ago. The estate features the sort of commanding view that once inspired Hudson River School painters, as well as 50 acres of buffer space to shield the party from prying eyes.

Think about your own political participation since Obama took office, and compare it to 2008. You’ve probably signed online petitions, clicked to contact your representatives, maybe commented on political blogs. These are valuable activities. I do some most every day. But they aren’t the same as knocking on doors, making phone calls, talking politics with people who may disagree with you, and doing all the other things that created the 2006 and 2008 Democratic victories. They also aren’t the same as rallying in the streets, attending town meetings, picketing the offices of predatory corporations or destructive politicians, or working in other visible ways to shift America’s political culture and pressure on our elected officials to genuinely address our urgent crises. Since November 2008 it’s been the political right that’s largely dominated public discussion, even though their policies have created our vast array of problems to begin with. Of course they have the advantage of a shameless echo chamber, from Andrew Breitbart to Rush Limbaugh and Fox. But the grassroots right has also been more active on the ground, while those of us who helped elect Obama have acted in mostly virtual ways, leaving us all too often invisible and unheard.

Together, the importance of these stories is clear: Staunching the flow of carbon into the atmosphere is every bit as urgent as staunching the flow of oil into the Gulf. We used to think that global warming would take a long time to bite, that it was a problem measured in decades and centuries, not days and months. But in fact it’s breaking over us right now, right this minute. Time is the enemy here, too. Every day that passes makes it harder to deal with.
